  • Independent Curators International (ICI) profiles TYPOLOGY!

    hub

We are thrilled and honoured to be the subject of Independent Curators International’s first member Spotlight, a new feature of their quarterly update which goes out to over 500 professional and prospective curators around the world. Thanks ICI!

For over 40 years, ICI has been facilitating the production of exhibitions, events, publications, research and training opportunities for emerging and established curators, reaching over 400 cities and 55 countries so far. Connecting curators, artists, exhibition spaces, and audiences from all over, ICI is building a collaborative network that is regionally relevant while also inscribed within an international framework — a mission that perfectly mirrors our own here at TYPOLOGY.

We look forward to further engaging in the curatorial exchanges that ICI provides — through discourse, education, and exhibitions. Check out their website, which is a wonderful source of information for curators, artists, and anyone interested in contemporary art at the international level.

TYPOLOGY is pleased to present FLIGHTS & LANDINGS, a two-part exhibition of work by three multidisciplinary artists from three different cities: Brooklyn-based Tamara Gayer, Berlin-based Christine Gedeon, and Toronto-based Janine Miedzik. Known for their visually engaging, site-responsive approaches to installation, each artist will debut a large-scale project in one of the stairwell galleries at Artscape Youngplace (the Flights), complemented by a selection of smaller artworks representing object-oriented aspects of their practices in the project space (the Landings).

And now for something a little different…

If the image from our last email seemed strangely familiar, it’s because we neglected to swap out the previous exhibition shot with an image for the new one. Arrgh – sorry about that!

To make amends, we are taking this opportunity to share a few bonus photos of some of Mary Hambleton’s wonderful work in the show. The exhibition will feature 20 of her works on paper, plus a large painting also by Hambleton, and an immersive video installation by Sara MacLean.

TYPOLOGY presents A Riveder le Stelle | Mary Hambleton and Sara MacLean

    ARiv_pr_img

TYPOLOGY is thrilled to announce the launch of our guest curating program with A Riveder le Stelle, a two person exhibition. Featuring rarely seen works on paper by the late New York painter Mary Hambleton, and a video installation by Toronto-based Sara MacLean, the exhibition is curated by interdisciplinary artist and independent curator Heather Nicol.

Taking its name from the final line of Dante’s Inferno (1314), A Riveder le Stelle, “to gaze once more upon the stars,” is conceived as a virtual conversation between two artists, separated by time, place, and practice, whose work nevertheless manifests striking formal and conceptual correspondences. Among the many such convergences are a mutual interest in the body, the scientific gaze (particularly as it relates to diagnostic medicine), relationships between the infinitesimal and the celestial, and the sense of wonder such scrutiny engenders.

  • Project space update: So much to celebrate and anticipate!

    IMG_4829-2

As 2014 winds down, we are both reflecting on what a fantastic first year TYPOLOGY has had in its home at Artscape Youngplace, and anticipating the exciting exhibitions and initiatives we’ve got planned for 2015. But before we get to our updates and invites, we’d first like to thank every one of our subscribers and followers for your continued interest, participation, and support. As the project space learns and grows, there’s much for our audiences to look forward to, including better and more streamlined communications, online shopping and submissions, and other opportunities to participate from near and far. Thanks for staying with us!

First, sorry about that Halloween-themed message from yesterday — we’re adjusting to some newness in our emailing program and it’s been a bit of a bumpy transition. Lessons are being learned and we appreciate your patience.

TYPOLOGY presents Elemental | Book Works by Cathryn Miller

    CMIL_snowy

As we head into late fall, the chill in the air and the leaves underfoot put us in mind of the seasons and the stars, elemental concepts evoking cycles, rituals, and deeply held wishes. Not coincidentally, such themes form the conceptual threads weaving much of Saskatchewan artist Cathryn Miller’s work together, and so it is with a sense of both celebratory anticipation and seasonal cheer that we announce our next exhibition.

(Can you imagine a more perfect gift for that complex person in your life?)
