We’ve had an amazing first month at TYPOLOGY with our inaugural exhibition, ERRATIC ROOM | LYLA RYE, and last night’s holiday party was a wonderful way to celebrate everything we’ve achieved and experienced and learned in the process. Certainly I personally have many people to thank for their hard work, dedication, advice, enthusiasm, and support, and am remiss in not jumping upon the opportunity to express my gratitude at the height of festivities last evening.
Last week to see ERRATIC ROOM | LYLA RYE, a Canadian Art and NOW Magazine Must-See Show. It’s a busy time of year but we hope you’ll stop in for the final two days of ERRATIC ROOM, featuring an immersive video installation and sculptural photo edition by Lyla Rye. While you’re here, pick up an exhibition catalogue, limited edition print, (both shown above), or fun Screen Grab button by the artist – great affordable gifts for the art lovers in your life! Final exhibition hours are Weds and Thurs, Dec 18 and 19, from 12–5. Come on by!
After exhibition close this Thursday at 5pm, we’ll be transforming the space for our first annual Holiday Happy Hour! Join us from 5:30–8:30 to warm up with mulled wine, decompress with prosecco, and sway to the sweet sounds of Mark Marczyk (violinist for Lemon Bucket Orkestra), courtesy of Small World Music. Featuring festive snacks, including beautiful cheese from La Fromagerie. Apple cider and crafts table for the kids!
Also in the building at Artscape Youngplace, our first floor friends Paperhouse Studio will be having their holiday party from 5–9, featuring drinks, cake, and paper making. We should have an elevator by Thursday, so start down there and end up here, or vice versa!

We’re still in recovery mode from an amazing opening night at Artscape Youngplace. After more than a decade laying empty, what a thrill it was to see the hallways and former Shaw Street School classrooms filled once again with people, including and especially all the enthusiastic kids. Artscape launched Youngplace in style, with resident artist and curator Heather Nicol’s two building-wide exhibitions, Unarchive and Stairmasters, gracing the passageways, plus food, drink, and music galore.
TYPOLOGY’s doors were open all day for tours by the kids from neighbouring Givins Shaw School, who unanimously loved the unpredictable projections of ERRATIC ROOM. Some even came back with their parents later in the day, joining the hundreds of visitors who attended the official ERRATIC ROOM opening and catalogue launch as part of the greater building’s festivities. The response was wonderful and we thank everyone who stopped by, introduced themselves, made comments, and/or signed up for the mailing list. Welcome to TYPOLOGY!
The past several weeks have been jam-packed with building, painting, designing, printing, updating, inviting, and finally, installing Lyla Rye’s ERRATIC ROOM at the project space. Below are some photos of the buildout process and exhibition installation in progress. We’ve still got a few coats of paint and some finishing touches on the gallery space to go, but we should be in good shape for the grand opening on November 19th. Office cabinetry and furnishings won’t be in place, but who needs to sit down at an opening, right?

Please join us on Tuesday, November 19th from 5–10 pm for our grand opening in conjunction with the wider Community Opening at Artscape Youngplace! You’ll find us in No. 302 on the third floor, where we’ll be debuting ERRATIC ROOM, a video installation and limited-edition photo series by Lyla Rye. The artist will be in attendance for most of the evening.
Signed copies of the ERRATIC ROOM exhibition catalogue, as well as the first in a series of low-priced limited edition prints produced by TYPOLOGY, will also be available (previews to be posted next week).

After many months of anticipation and delays, we are thrilled to announce that TYPOLOGY is in the building!
As of yesterday, we have possession of our unit (#302) within the newly repurposed Shaw Street School, a beautiful heritage building in Toronto’s West End. As Artscape’s largest project to date nears completion (with over $17 million in renovations and upgrades), the work on our project space has just begun. Framing of walls to divide the space into office and exhibition areas starts today, with electrical and millwork scheduled throughout the rest of October. Stay tuned for updates on our progress, and for more information on our sweet little suite, please see the About the Space page on our website.
Hello again, and welcome to Typology.ca!
As many of you know, we’ve been posting original content to our blog, Typologica, for over the past year as we wait patiently for Artscape to complete renovations to our future home. Construction on the Shaw Street School continues, and the ongoing delays are a not unexpected outcome of the remediation, preservation, and modernization that needs to be done to fully rehabilitate this beautiful heritage building. In the meantime, the response to the blog has been truly wonderful and we are grateful for all the interest, support, and encouragement we’ve received thus far.
With the launch of typology.ca, we’re thrilled to bring you lots more information on the project space, guidelines for art and curatorial submissions, and of course, continued posting to Typologica in its new home here on our website.
And, what you see here is just the beginning. As submissions, exhibitions, events, and other projects are developed and finalized, we’ll be updating the site and blog with announcements, artist profiles, a curated artist registry, an online shop, and more!
So please take a look around, subscribe to the blog for updates (if you haven’t already), and consider making a submission for possible inclusion in a future exhibition or event.

We hope you are having an enjoyable holiday season so far. Here’s a quick post to update you on what’s been happening at TYPOLOGY. Since our last post, we’ve reached the final stages of completion for phase one of our new website, and will be ready to launch in the new year. We’re excited to soon be bringing you an official introduction to the project space, information on what’s to come, and guidelines for artists and curators who may be interested in participating. Also we’ll be moving our blog, Typologica, to a new home within the website, from which we’ll continue to post updates, reviews, and news as we prepare for our grand opening later in 2013.
