  • Celebrating 70 posts with a project space update and some images from Art School (Dismissed)

    It’s been some time since our last post on the project space, so we thought we’d celebrate our 70th (!) with an update on recent developments. As some of you may know, this blog has been TYPOLOGY’s virtual home while our website and physical space are under construction. Both have seen delays for various reasons, but we promise that things are continuing to move forward…

    For those who don’t yet know, TYPOLOGY is a not-for-profit project space which will be housed within a historic school building currently undergoing renovation by Artscape, a local organization with an international reputation for city-building through the arts. Award-winning and multi-faceted projects at Wychwood Barns, the Distillery, and Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island have proven Artscape’s model of repurposing underutilized buildings for the benefit of the arts and the greater community.

  • Object Lessons at Proteus Gowanus

    While we’re on the topic of emulation-worthy organizations (see previous post on Nudashank), we would be remiss if we didn’t profile one of the most intriguing and exciting exhibition spaces we’ve seen in a while. Proteus Gowanus, tucked into a turn-of-the-century former box factory just off its namesake canal in Brooklyn, is a fascinating mash-up of art gallery, cabinet of curiosity, history museum, natural science lab, artist’s studio, and bookstore/library. Their stated mission is to “create an alternative, culturally rich environment…where the boundaries between the artist and non-artist fade, where images and ideas from disparate disciplines are juxtaposed to create new meanings.” This delights us, as with our own focus on curatorial experimentation and wide-ranging interest in all aspects of visual culture, TYPOLOGY aspires to become a similarly hybrid space from which to stimulate dialogue and ideas between artists, art forms, images, objects, and audiences. Like a smaller, Canadian Proteus Gowanus, we’ll seek interdisciplinary collaborations to create a spirited and engaging space for exploration and discovery.

  • A little love for Baltimore: Nudashank turns 3

    Nudashank, an independent, artist-run gallery space in Baltimore, Maryland, is celebrating their third anniversary this week. Founded by Seth Adelsberger and Alex Ebstein in 2009, the gallery is dedicated to showcasing young and emerging artists in group, two-person and solo exhibitions. Over the past three years, Nudashank has shown the work of over 150 artists from Baltimore and beyond, fulfilling a mission to bring new blood into the Baltimore scene, benefitting regional artists and providing a new venue for local, national, and international artwork. The gallery is located on the third floor of the H&H building in downtown Baltimore, which also houses numerous other artist-run galleries and performance spaces.

  • What’s next for TYPOLOGY

    Timed to coincide with Artscape’s groundbreaking and press announcements this past week, TYPOLOGY made its online debut. With the project space still under construction and a website in the works, it was admittedly the softest of openings, but we are thrilled to be official at last, and thankful for all the interest and support we’ve received so far.

    Now that the proverbial dust has settled a bit, you may be wondering what’s in store for the coming year. We’ve been hard at work developing our programming for the first few seasons, and will continue to seek out artists, architects, designers, performers, writers, and curators with whom to collaborate on future exhibitions and events. Proposals and submissions will be accepted online once we launch our full website; in the meantime, please get in touch — we’d love to know what you’re working on.

  • Announcing Toronto’s newest not-for-profit project space

    Here it is, our first official postcard to the world, announcing the virtual launch of TYPOLOGY, a not-for-profit experimental project space in Toronto’s West End.

    This photo was taken from the windows of our future physical home, a heritage school building currently being repurposed into a centre for the arts by Artscape. Slated for completion in the Fall of 2012, the centre will house an exciting mix of arts, cultural, and social mission organizations.
